Why the Name Canary?
Early coal miners did not have the special equipment that miners have today to measure whether gases were building up to dangerous levels. Canaries served as an early warning system for the miners. Canaries' highly sensitive metabolism detected methane and carbon monoxide gas traces that signaled poisoned air or potential explosions. Canaries usually chirp and sing and make noise all day long. However, if the carbon monoxide levels got too high, the canaries would have trouble breathing. When the canaries were no longer singing, miners knew that the gas levels were too high. They would leave the mine quickly to avoid calamity. Thus, canaries were an early warning system to provide miners with the information they needed to remain safe and healthy.
